Ok, Piperinos,
So, I’m in the midst of a fairly extensive first annual on my 1965 235. The annual itself is pretty much done...but we’re doing a lot of “while we’re in there” stuff.
I purchased the Airward kit for SB 977, and was laying out the lines today to cut the access hatches. Based on Piper’s drawings, the flats of the ovals for the inspection panels run from roughly 8.5 to 11” forward of the aft rivet line of the baggage compartment floor. This would put the panels -decidedly- in the aft 1/3 of the baggage compartment floor - a seemingly silly position for facilitating inspection of the rear wing attach points. This area is nearly aft of the flaps themselves when retracted.
The SB also shows another overall drawing which puts the inspection panels about where I’d expect the, - close to the rear wing attach points. As a matter of fact, orienting the hatches in the recommended positions, using the forward edge of the baggage compartment, puts them about where one would expect.
All revisions of SB977 show the aft river line as the reference point for these measurements. Do any of you have photos of your SB977 panels which agree/disagree with the measurements as given?
