Opinion question for all those interested in passing on their thoughts. I am looking to purchase my first aircraft. I learned in a C172 glass panel years ago and recently transitioned to a PA-28 at my last bi-annual. I am planning to obtain my IFR in the plane that I purchase. Its main mission will be a family hauler (me, wife, and three kids 9-6-5) between DFW, TX and: AR and all around TX. (Family in AR and my son competes professionally in gymnastics which puts us all over the state of TX just about every weekend Jan - April).

I am looking at two planes. One is a 1976 Lance straight tail w/ new paint, interior, and avionics. The other is a 1999 Saratoga II TC. With roughly the diff of 150 hours on the engine and a price diff of about $50k, what are your opinions. Both are very similarly equiped (A/C, Garmin, etc) I'd like to keep the option to fly into Pagosa Springs, CO or the like in March or summer months and possibly into Albuquerque. Does that force my hand to the TC? I've heard only rumblings (usually from Beech guys) not to ever get Turbo but I've read that the 98 and up models with the automatic wastegate negate the troubles. Is that true?

Thanks - Josh
