Anybody have a pretty detailed knowledge on C-54/DC-4 systems?

I was recently sent the detailed schedule of my grandfather returning from Okinawa in WW2. It reminded me that when I was young he verbally told me that half way between Hickam and San Francisco they had a fire. I recall him saying a crew member climbed out in the wing to extinguish it, otherwise nobody would have known what would have happened to them if they went down. I’m assuming it was likely a gas powered heater, but not sure. Just one of the things I wish I had more details about.

For any interested:
Okinawa to Guam- 7 hours
Guam to Kwajalein- 8:15
Kwajalein to Johnson Island -7:20
Johnson Island to Hickam - 4:30
Hickam to San Francisco - 11:15 (This leg he didn’t mention resetting his watch, so assume it was total flying time.)
