This was discovered two weeks ago on an airplane that flew in for maintenance.
Here is a photo of the inside of the left wing’s rear spar. The wing attach fitting is riveted to the other side of the spar. Note cracks in spar and missing rivets. Rivets also visible with corroded and diminished diameter shop heads.
SB1244C has inspection and repair kit criteria. Aft Spar Rework / Repair kit 764-998 $1K. If wing does not have access panel then an additional access panel kit 765-998. $200. Panel kit contains doubler & cover plate for both wings.
The rear spar can be cut out and spliced together again with Piper’s approval. The SB has a restrictive length on the repair area so either Piper or a field approval will be necessary if damage is outside the repair kit limits. The rear spar runs the length of the wing so replacing it is not cost effective versus a splice repair.
