I have a 98 Archer III (Lycoming 0-360-A1D). The POH says to Lean above 5,000 MSL. I was taught to lean above 3,000. I've been leaning at 5,000 or above to an EGT between 14-14.5. Noticed today that the EGT started dropping after 3,000, so I tried leaning then, getting the EGT from 12 up to 14.5 like usual. This resulted in an increase in RPM and slightly better climb performance.

So, what's the rule on leaning? So very little is taught about leaning in PPL training. How about a few pearls of wisdom?
