I decided to take a look in the tailcone of the new-to-me '73 turbo Aztec, since that was somewhere I hadn't seen yet. I ran across something interesting: the pitch trim indicator wire (appears to be a piece of piano wire) was twisted about two turns around the pitch trim 1/16" cable as they ran along together.

I checked the trim tension, released the turnbuckle, untangled the wires, re-tensioned and saftied the turnbuckle. Haven't flown it yet, but now the indicator seems to lag a bit and not respond as I change pitch trim. Did I do something wrong? Was this a way of getting the pitch trim cable to help drive the indicator wire? If so, it seems like a pretty jack-leg way of doing it.
