The way I set the throttle is at 500ft AGL I pull back to 25/2500 and hold that during climb. Then at cruise altitude, which is usually less than 5000ft, I pull everything back to 22.5/2400. Then I lean for cruise using the ROP method.
I was talking to my A&P/AI yesterday and he said that he pushes the throttle to the firewall and leaves it there. On climb he reduces the RPM a little, then on cruise reduces it back to 2300 or so and leans LOP. The reasoning is that by the time you get to 5000ft, you just about need full throttle to maintain cruise power anyway. I'm going to do the GAMI lean test and inflight lean mag check. That will tell us how closely the cylinders are balanced. Being a carb engine, the cylinders may not be balanced enough to lean LOP.
