This is puzzling considering other's experience. It may have to do with operating conditions, because running excessively lean can do bad things to good engine parts.
In the comments section a poster lamented that we are still using carburetors and magnetos. But on a recent cross-country auto trip my alternator failed when we were between major cities on a section of road that was down to a single lane...no room to pull off. Knowing that the engine was dependent of battery power to keep the fuel injection and ignition systems running, I kept a wary eye on the voltmeter. Yes your electronic ignition and EFI system can have backup batteries...but they are batteries nonetheless.
