I am just curious what decisions others would have made in this situation. I don’t have a lot of time in the soup, even though I have had my instrument eating for some time now.
Departure is clear and a million.
Detination has ceilings at 2,900,’ tops at 5,000’. Freezing level is about 3,000 feet.
Do you file IFR knowing you will spend a fair amount of time in the clouds near freezing temperatures.
Do you come in over the top, and ask for an IFR descent through the clouds? IFR min vectoring altitude in the area is 2,000’
Or do you scud run, come in underneath knowing a few of the clouds extend down to 2,000’ AGL? No obstacles in the area to worry about hitting.
I am curious to hear other people’s reasoning, then I will share the my decision and how it turned out. Non-FIKI aircraft. Only anti ice system is pitot heat.
