When do you add flaps during an IFR approach? My instructor always had me fly the approach at 90kts, flaps up, then do the before landing checklist and add flaps 10 after the FAF. (This was in a C-172).

Now that I am done woth my training, I have read that others will add flaps 10° and run their landing checklist before the FAF. This seems like a better way to me because it is less distraction for the most critical phase of flight, and I would not upset my glide path by adding flaps and power after I am established on the glide slope. I haven't tried this yet though. Any thoughts on which method is better?
