ELT location

Just curious if it's normal to have the elt mounted in the cabin on the side panel. Mine is and as I'm cleaning up the interior I was going to just paint it to match my trim. Before I do that though I wondered if it really could/should be mounted out of sight somewhere else. I can't say that I've seen others mounted within sight.
