best places to hit on west coast?

I'm planning a trip with the better half in March. Leavig phoenix area and thinking I will head up the west coast until they say 'eh a lot, turn right for a state or two and then head south again home... What are some places we should hit. FYI I'm 30, she's 26.

We're thinking Napa/sonoma/San Francisco area, seattle?, yellowstone?... ?

Thanks for any suggestions. Also looking for any particularly scenic air routes/cheap lodging or possibly even on field camping (which we've never done but talked about.)
