Hello, and thank you for taking your time to read my post, and possibly weigh-in with helpful ideas. To begin, my son and I are working on our Private licenses together. Considering the number of rental hours involved in the process, we went ahead and purchased a PA-28-140 as a trainer. The plane overall is decent, yet it does have a few instruments that require service or upgrade. The first on the list is the DG. It precesses BADLY! It is an old AN type and we're intending on replacing it with a card type. My research indicated that the panel has limited depth and common DG's will not fit in that location. However, I found that a Aeritalia DG, which is shorter, will. I purchased a used unit and have it out for rebuild now. Looking at the panel and how the current AN is installed, it looks like my work is cut out for me. Does anyone out there know what it will take to get this thing installed? Obviously, the panel will need modification as it is configured for an AN type with a smaller dial, etc. I see that Aircraft Spruce offers a panel adapter from an AN DG too a 3 1/8" hole.....but I'm not sure if this is what I need. If I simply need to re-cut the hole, that will be very difficult given the current hole is offset from center. I understand there are panel hole punches out there...but $140 to cut one hole seems a bit excessive. In addition, vacuum system connection recommendations? Any thoughts and/or wisdom on the topic would be appreciated.
