How much would you expect adding an autopilot to cost?

My CFII recently had an STEC-30 installed in his Comanche for about $13K, I believe.

I've been wanting a new autopilot, also. What I found is that what a really need is a new airplane, with an autopilot. Paying $30k for a new autopilot for an airplane that is worth the same, just doesn't make sense!

Call Wentworth and ask for Kevin. He helped me put together an original Piper AutoControlIII Autopilot for my PA28-161. Works Great!

Quoted about $16k for stec 30 about 6 months ago. I purchased an aero-trim instead and spent some time learning to trim my airplane properly. Once trimmed, I've been simply removing my hand from the yoke when reading charts or adjusting dials. I found that if I hold the yoke while doing something else, I am responsible for attitude changes. The plane flies straight and level when trimmed.

IMC or turbulence is another matter, but I can't justify the expense for a $50k airplane.
