In the late '50's I was on a DC-7 taking off out of Midway in Chicago. The pilot turned up the engines gaining speed on the taxiway and then a rapid 90 degree turn onto the takeoff runway. I was taught to back taxi to the end of the runway, do a 180, set the brakes, go to full throttle, raise the tail and then let go of the brakes.
During a recent biannual I did a short field takeoff using the DC-7 method in the Archer. The instructor seemed surprised but passed it OK. Which method is preferred now?
