This weekend after a fairly long cross country (well long for me...about 90 minutes) at 6,500 feet, I came in a tad high on final and had to pull the power to idle faster than I usually do. I was flying a 1981 Saratoga. I am always careful about reducing power too fast to avoid shock cooling.

When I did this, the plane backfired. Nothing extreme, just 3 or 4 pops. I have never heard this before from this plane.

Is this normal, or an indication of a problem...or that I did something wrong?
