Private Pilot Exam Prep Apps

A young fellow interested in studying for his private pilot written inquired of me which iPhone / iPad app he should choose to help him prepare for the exam.

Back in my time I took a couple month long course at a community college, which qualified me to sit for the test.

Could I hear from actual flight instructors and others with current knowledge what are the better apps out there for studying for the private pilot written?

I look in the App Store and such apps run...

...oh my, I see, for instance, the Sport's learn to fly course is $200.

All thoughts on this subject are appreciated.
