Looking at 300-400 mile legs, no rush. Plane is Archer II. Loading is 2 up front totaling about 360. No one in back and about 110 max in the baggage compartment. Since I am not in any hurry and would like to cruise about 5500-7500, what power setting will give the best economy and are lower speeds really worth the fuel savings? Lets assume I do not have an EGT and lean to rough and rich just back to smooth (old way).

Would extra weight (lead shot) be helpful in the baggage or rear seat area to minimize trim settings? If you fly slower, you have to trim up to maintain altitude and doesn't that increase drag? I am confused about what really pays off.
