Well, I decided to bite the bullet and go for the KT74. I don't want to spend the extra money to see info on the small screen of the 430W and I don't think I'm realistically going to upgrade to an Aspen or Avidyne anytime soon. I AM going for my instrument rating and will occasionally fly IFR but living in Southern California most of my flying is VFR with very little actual weather like thunderstorms.

So....I am content with displaying traffic and weather on my iPad mini and I carry an iPad 2 as a backup at all times. The Stratus is plugged into the cig lighter and always charged so even if I lose power in the plane I can still see traffic and weather on the iPad for 8 hours....

They are also troubleshooting inability to hear NAV 1, connecting the JPI 830 to the 430W and exploring the nav light breaker popping. And also fishing through 2 light bulb sockets that had recessed for the panel illumination.

The main impetus for initiating this upgrade is my consistent flying in this crowded Mode C veil in Los Angeles and the surrounding area. A few times I have been receiving multiple traffic targets only to have them disappear as must have flown out of range of the current ADSB ping. When I see all the traffic on the display it sure seems a lot safer. Many times ATC will call out traffic and I've already got a beat on them on the display. Yes I do also look out the window!

I'll update the thread as the install goes on and once I test fly. I'll have a Narco AT50a for sale too!
