During a routine 100hr inspection, we found this:
The mechanic was under the plane and noticed an odd very sharp edged fleck of paint. Couldn't really see/feel much otherwise. The dye penetrant exam showed it up.
Of course, where there is one crack, there could be others. We don't know the mechanism, other than just age. We'll have to pull the engine no matter what. What a nuisance, big $$ and down time. But, better found on inspection, than on gear/engine separation.
