Single payer does have some advantages wrt simplicity. I think that the main objection is that the government runs it.

How about a single payer system run by a private company? Well, that would be a monopoly (which we only allow for the government). So, how about two companies. who can compete? Think about FedEx and UPS. In that field the government is also involved, but that's because the USPS is in the constitution. But for that, the USPS would be gone, like DHL.
