Hey all. Does anyone here have dual Garmin G5's installed with a GTN-650? If so can you advise if you were able to use the G5 as the primary HSI? I would like to ditch my aging vacuum system and am looking to upgrade my avionics with the following:

  • Garmin GMA 345
  • Garmin GTN 650
  • Garmin GNC 255
  • Garmin GTX 345
  • Garmin G5 (AI)
  • Garmin G5 (HSI)

However, I am being told the following by the shop I am dealing with:

"GTN 650 will require GI-106B as G5 cannot be used as primary instrument" and am being told that the GTN 650 would need to have both the G5 and my current KI-204 hooked up to it.

"GNC 255 will require separate GI-106B as well"

"G5 is not certified as a primary VOR/LOC indicator, also not certified as primary DG replacement"

Can someone please guide this lost sheep? Many thanks in advance!
