I am helping my nephew get his PPL. The idea is that he will go all the way thru to CFI so that he can work as a flight instructor locally. (He loves to fly, but has no interest in working for the airlines.)
The idea is that I will put him on payroll as my safety pilot and aircraft manager. However, after talking with my accountant, I realized that I could be writing off the cost of training him, as well as count all aircraft expenses involved with his training as business use of the aircraft. (Increasing the percentage of it's costs that are tax deductible.)
So the question is, can someone be paid to go through flight training? It's not like I'm training him to fly, (which would require a CPL) I'm just paying him to learn to fly, and I'm paying for the cost of learning to fly, as well as providing the aircraft for him to train in.
Also, can you go from PPL straight to CPL, or do you have to get IFR and other ratings first? I only have my PPL, not my IFR, so he wouldn't be flying as my safety pilot in instrument conditions... yet.
