Aztec "E" Open door in flight

We had an incident this week where the passenger door was opened during flight. It took all the strength of the passengers to hold the door shut. They claimed it changed the flying characteristics of the plane. They believed the door was acting as a vertical wing, and the door would have opened wide. Has anyone else experienced an open Aztec door during flight? If so, what was your experience?
