73 Challenger 180 O-360
Flying over the frozen Saginaw MI bay last night I looked down at my amp meter to see it reading below zero. I went into power conservation mode and cycled the alternator switch and the amp meter jumped back up for about 10 seconds. I tried changing loads and leaving it off for a few minutes.I reset the alternator probably 20 times. Nothing seemed to consistently work. Sometimes the alternator stayed online for 5 minutes and sometimes not. It did seem if I piled on the electrical load with all radios, fuel pump, pitot heat, landing light, nav lights and beacon that it stayed on longer. A full load would indicate about 30 amps and as I reduced things it would drop the correct amount of amps. Towards the end of the trip it stayed online for about 20 minutes. My battery is always on a tender when the aircraft is in the hangar so I don't suspect I have any issues with it. I was at 6500 ft turning about 2500RPM. Nothing unusual. OAT was about -10F. Anyone have any ideas. I have the old Chrysler 37 amp system. I was thinking voltage regulator.
I appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.
