I have read a couple threads on this A.D. but want to see if someone can clarify. The A.D. (98-02-08) says to comply with Lycoming S.B. 505B. Under "Time of compliance" section 2 for pitted crank shafts says:

2. Pitted Crankshafts.
Fluorescent Penetrant Inspections are required every 100 hours of operation or each year whichever occurs first until the crankshaft is replaced at overhaul or earlier at the owner's discretion, not to exceed 12 years. My question is when does the 12 years start? I am reading it as for the date of the S.B? Or is it from the date the corrosion is discovered?

This particular plane I am interested in apparently has not ever been inspected for this until last year. During the inspection very minor pits were found which requires a 12 month/100 hour FPI inspection for cracks. Can it continue to fly if no cracks are found or does the crank need to be replaced due to the 12 year replacement???

Thanks!
