What's the 3/4 inch hole in the floor (pilot's side)

When I lifted the carpet in my PA28-181 for the new Airtex carpet I found a 3/4 inch hole in the floor - it is clean cut and looks factory made. Also the second aluminium floor sheet (on top of the pink foam) had the same hole directly above. This is on the Pilot's side.

There is no closed grommet to block the hole but it might have dropped out in the last 4o years - so if you are looking from below, it's just an open hole with carpet/foam on top.

Another Piper parked on the grass had the identical hole, but another Cherokee 6 did not have the hole.

What's this for?
