Small holes in the floor...under the carpet of my Dakota interior.

Within the past year I had my local mechanic fit a new Airtex interior into my 1984 Dakota, and I note that the carpet pieces under the pilot and passenger feet are not fixed in place - they just sit in those spaces like floor mats in cars. Because of this, I noticed what looks like a small round hole under the carpet (1/8" diameter maybe) that goes all the way through the floor, and there appears to be another hole like that under the left backseat passenger's feet. Is this normal? Some kind of vent or drain? I'm hoping that this isn't related to some kind of structural problem...like missing rivets or something. I don't have pictures yet.
