I started working on my private pilot ticket twenty five years ago. Had a blast, loved every minute and almost got it done - solo'd, cross country's done, hood time, night hours with landings, etc. I did not have enough ground school to take the written test (now referred to as the knowledge test) and obviously didn't take my check ride. Well, I was doing all of that while building a career to pay for these kinds of hobbies which took more time than I imagined. Then I met the gal of my dreams and got married. Then we had a baby, and another, and another and then one more. Then I really had to work! No more time (or $) for flying then! But I never forgot or gave up on the dream. Well things are coming around... I am managing my career, it's not controlling me and the international travel is way down (took a long time, but I am finally getting there). The kids are growing up and actually more independent than I would hope (now I know why my tough old man who never whimpered would shed a tear when "cats in the cradle" was played - because now it's my eyes that are wet!). And my wonderful bride of 20 years is encouraging me to chase that dream. Well, I didn't ask twice! I found a bird that fit my mission and objectives and made her mine. Next I begged, borrowed and waited in line for instructors to fly with me (not too many in the rural area of Northern Michigan that I live in). I essentially started from scratch and re-trained to meet the standards. AND TODAY I passed my private pilot check ride and became a pilot! Many thanks to my instructors, family, friends and the regular contributors to this forum for educating, encouraging and enabling me to finally make this milestone a reality! It's not about the destination, it's all about the journey and here is where it really begins... For those of you still working at it, never give up! If I can do it, so can you.
