Wearing Helmet - GA

The other day I saw a couple fly in and both pilots in both the planes were wearing helmets. Neither were in aerobatic planes and both were passing through and refueling. This was the first time I have seen GA Pilots wearing helmets in their planes, is this seen often anywhere else or was this just a rare occasion of someone's personal prefrence on their safety?
