Military blimp gets loose from Army installation in Maryland, drifts over to Pennsylvania

Jets monitoring the situation, NORAD says

By Andrea Noble - The Washington Times - Wednesday, October 28, 2015
A military blimp has come untethered from the cable connecting it to the ground at the Aberdeen Proving Ground Army installation in Edgewood, Maryland, and is now drifting overhead in neighboring Pennsylvania, military officials said.

The Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System surveillance system broke free of its tethering cable around 11:54 a.m. Wednesday, according to a statement issued by an Aberdeen. It is pulling approximately 6,700 feet of cable.

The blimp is holding at about 16,000 feet and is being monitored by two F-16 fighter jets from Atlantic City, according to a statement issued by NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command).

Officials have warned people who may see the aerostat to keep a safe distance and to call 911.
