My Cherokee 140 is in for its annual & I got a call from the shop that the starter housing was moving slightly when you reached up & grabbed it. The conversation went on to the point that I was told these older starters aren’t reliable & I might get stranded somewhere, so I should replace it. Next day I dropped into the shop unannounced & talked with the young man working on the annual & asked about the starter. His response was, that there was some housing bolts that needed tightening & he took care of it & I was good to go. Talked with the shop manager again & he’s talking about a new light weight $1,000 starter that I should have installed.
Anyone hear of any history with some of the older heavier starters having reliability issues?
