The irony is that I just finished reading "Too Far From Home", a book about the astronauts (and a cosmonaut) who were stranded on the ISS when the Columbia self-destructed. The Soyuz TMA-1 was their only ticket home. That one had a ballistic re-entry also, and the g's went to 8.0.
If we're going to keep sending people to the ISS we need some redundancy in the vehicles to get them home.
