Hello All

Full disclosure - I am a scientist. I study the intersection of people and technology. I just attended a big conference on current research in this arena. So I want to pose a question for amicable discussion - and please - I do not want to turn this into a pissing contest. So try to keep it civil.

The Carrington event was a massive solar flare that occurred in 1859. You can read about it here:
http://www.history.com/news/a-perfect-solar-superstorm-the-1859-carrington-event

If this event happened today - we would have about a 20 hour warning, due to satellites that watch the sun, to shut down technology - but even if it is turned off a lot of technology - a very large percentage would be fried.

For example: GPS satellites might not survive, lots of aviation related stuff would burn out. Also the US power grid, if given warning could be turned off temporarily, but would still suffer major malfunctions.

So here is my question - In the event of a "Carrington" solar flare...

What major factors do you believe would contribute to Societal Resiliance?

What major factors do you believe would reduce Societal Resiliance?
