When I told my old CFI I was building a homebuilt, he said, "Them things is dangerous". That from a guy who started flying in the late 1920's and his first plane was a Curtis Robin with an OX-5 engine...a good day flying was when you didn't get a broken camshaft. He tried to fly to Portugal solo in the 30's in a Lockheed Vega and crashed in the jungle in Central America en-route to Brazil. Taught Navy primary in N2S biplanes. Was still flying into his 90's.
Fear is relative.
