I've run across a possible candidate Cherokee 180c. Paint, interior, equip., TT, and price look promising, but...engine has 2003 hrs since factory 0 time engine and still has good compressions.

What is the parts cost to do a top OH (repair)? If you pull all 4 jugs can rods be replaced? It's probably not necessary to replace rods, I'm just curious. Do cylinders have to be replaced or can they get a cleanup hone or bore, and if the pistons checkout just get rings then a valve job?

Are new cylinders, pistons, valves, rockers, pushrods always required to be replaced or are those items sometimes inspected, cleaned, and re-used?

Of course I would have fees paid to the willing A&P who oversees all this but I've got a brother in law who is an excellent mechanic (who I trust with my life) that would turn the wrenches for free.

I've read that these engines will tell you when it's time to go into it due to wear. This is not a catastrophic failure but just a rough running or slight loss of power. Is that correct? I see that some of these 0-360s go 2500 hrs or more so who knows when it would need some work. What I'm trying to get at is, how safe is it to fly with a high time engine?
