Main Struts

So how do I know if my main struts are performing like they are supposed to? The previous owner of my plane gave me a tool (maybe a pump) that is used to service the struts. I have not looked at it yet. But how do I know when they need to be serviced? Will they not compress at all? Compress to far? What is too far?
