My Wife was looking through the used books for sale at our Library and found a book named When the Airlines Went to War by Robert J. Serling. Knowing how much we enjoy anything about WWII aviation she bought it for a quarter. It turned out to be an incredible book about how the airlines participated in the war and was filled with facts that I had never heard before. It is also filled with stories about people I had heard of before and people Ive never heard of. One such story was about a cigar-smoking maintenance supervisor named Roy Davis. Below is an excerpt from the book.
I remember when I read Arthur Haileys book, Airport, I wondered how he came up with the character named Joe Patroni because, to me, he seemed so much like a real airline maintenance foreman. As Paul Harvey would say, now we know the rest of the story.
