Recently my partner was flying VFR to an airport in Missouri (K15) and he decided to fly one of the two published RNAV approaches for practice. But it turned out that the only approach available at K15 was the VOR. I called Jepessen and was told that Garmin has a software problem on the 430W and 530W boxes which prevents them from including any Localizer Performance (LP) approaches. The more common LPV (same but with vertical guiidance) works fine, as do all the other versions of the WAAS based guidance.

The lesson I took from this is to always be prepared to fly a VOR or an ILS in case something goes wrong with the GPS. I'm just glad we learned the easy way.

Garmin has a fix, but it requires installing a software upgrade.

I should mention that Jepessen's service was excellent. The person I talked with understood the problem and immediately had the explanation. Spoke English too.
