Auto-Control IIIB and GI-275

Paid a vist to my avionics shop today. I would like to begin the process of installing 2 GI-275 ( remove the vacuum system P28B ) For the time being keep the Piper Auto-Control IIIB , its performing well and I have a GPSS DAC-31 . The tech made it sound like its MAJOR SURGERY if I keep the Auto-Control IIIB ?? Very expensive he said, not easy. ??? Has this been the norm for those that have the GI-275 and Auto-Control IIIB.
