I have a 1973 Piper Challenger (Cherokee like an Archer).

I noticed that my Ammeter was reading abnormally high after start the other day (about 50 instead of 10). I cycled the battery switch and it returned to normal. It was fine for an hour, but then it was reading high again. Once again, it reset with a quick cycling of the battery switch.

I hadn't flown in 3 weeks, so I thought maybe the battery was just a little low.

I started the plane today, and the Ammeter went right to 50. I let the airplane run for awhile to see if it would go down. I then tried to cycle the switch (although I was not taking it flying again with an abnormal reading).

Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I'm hoping it's just a bad battery.

Any help would be appreciated!
