I've seen lots of discussions surrounding the idea of replacing the entire autopilot with a newer one that has all the bells and whistles people want. However, I'm not interesting in putting $20k+ into doing this in my Arrow 180. I've seen airplanes that have a switch for altitude hold, and then they keep the standard heading hold autopilot (so, essentially, we've got a 2-axis autopilot). How would this be done? I assume it's best to take this to my mechanic, but I'm curious of how do-able this is, and what I should expect to dish out for this project.

Thank you!
