I understand the importance of opening the door before making an forced / off-airport landing. I've heard of a good tip to take off your shoe and jam it in the hinge area too.

But in the scenario that I need to break the "glass" in my Piper Dakota, does anyone have any good ideas?

I don't think the glass shattering key-chain thing that they sell for car glass would work.

I hate the idea of some heavy instrument flying around the cockpit.

I was flying right-seat in my friends Cirrus today and I saw that Cirrus has a ball peen hammer that is strapped inside the armrest between the two front seats. Though, apparently Cirrus also has a spot to use the hammer where the "glass" is easier to break.

I'm starting to think of something like this securely strapped to the very front of my seat hardware.

I haven't been able to find any suggestions or discussions online.

Does anyone have any thoughts?
