We tend to think of the sun as a constant, evenly burning heat lamp in space.
In truth, the sun is a roiling, thermonuclear cauldron of which we know little. Its heat output varies over short-term, mid-term, and long-term cycles of calm, anger, and fury. A single mass coronal ejection in just the right direction could wipe out all life on earth.
