From a February, 1940 Popular Mechanics article "It's Easy to Fly Your Own (Plane)", here's the annual cost to fly a "Piper Cub type" plane, based on 10,000 miles flown (@75 mph =133 hrs):

Depreciation $107.25
Gasoline $100
Oil $7.25
Hangar $75
Maintenance (Inspection) $5

Total $294.25

And a new Piper Cub could be had for $1000 cash or on an installment plan.

Avgas must have been pretty cheap back then, since $100 for gas equates to $0.75 per hour.

I wonder what inspection you got for $5.
