We own a 1981 Piper Warrior. For the last few months there has been a strange noise which seems to be from the left wheel area, it is a groaning or a scraping noise from the area of the left wing and probably the left gear but it is hard to pinpoint. The noise only happens on the ground, it only happens occasionally and lasts for a couple of seconds, usually though not always when the left brake is applied. It happens on grass and on tarmac. Sometimes it makes the noise even when being towed and usually when the nose wheel is away from center, i.e. when turning.
Since complaining about it it has been in the workshop a couple of times, the second time for two hours but they still could not find the reason despite checking the brakes and swapping various items. Both port & starboard brakes have been checked and found satis. The plane tracks straight when taxied and on takeoff and landing so it does not seem to be a binding brake and is not a noise you would expect if you used the brakes.
We are suspecting it is to do with the left wheel or brakes but everything checks out and It appears to be a mystery. Does anyone recognise these symptoms or have an idea as to what could be causing it? it is a little unnerving.
