I just bought my first plane, a 1978 Turbo Lance. It has a couple of issues I’d like to address, but need some advice.

Like many of the turbo Lances I looked at, the upper right side of the forward baggage compartment’s forward panel is detached. This is the backside of the firewall, directly behind the turbo. I assume the panel comes off due to the heat of the turbo. I’ve been searching for a replacement, but haven’t come up with one.

Is there a new version of this panel that is more heat resistant? Does anyone know of a better solution with more hear resistant materials?

Also, this plane has the original Altimatic IIIb autopilot. Heading hold only. I’m planning on flying IFR with my family and want a better autopilot to reduce the workload. What’s the best option? I have a GTN 650, vacuum AI, and basic DG. Is it worth it to install a used IIIc? Wait for Garmin to STC the 500 for the PA32? Or go with another option?
