Minimum temperature required for engine pre-heat

I read at one point that you should pre-heat your engine anytime the weather gets around or below freezing. While I always follow that rule, should you be plugging in your engine at a higher temperature? I've been trying to use 40F as my guideline temp to be on the safe side but am I doing any significant damage to my engine at that temperature?

Did Aviation Consumer ever do an article on this topic?
