I was in Navy OCS when the Zumwalt "Z-gram" came out allowing us to grow beards as long as they were "neatly trimmed". So all of us OCandidates grew them. They were a little help when standing mid-watch in the icy breezes that blew across that miserable spit of Rhode Island.

Just like head-top hair the grooming standards were enforced, but we were allowed to emulate the great military heroes of the past. In places where fresh water was scarce, like the old deisel "pig boat" subs, shaving was usually optional anyway.

I suppose this will become another area of contention between males and females. Perhaps females will be permitted to grow their body hair.
