I have heard the term Lycoming Death Rattle here and there, and it apparently describes a whole lotta shakin' going on upon startup of Lycoming engines. In my particular case, when the ambient temp is low, say around less than 5C, it shakes and runs rough for a good 30 seconds before smoothing out. Subsequent runups are always fine, with smooth operation throttling up and back. When temps are warmer, when it starts, it make shake a bit for 10 seconds or so before smoothing out.

So my questions are these.... What exactly is going on that creates this "Death Rattle", and would it be normal for ambient temps to play a role?

Also, once the engine is warm, and shut down and restarted, it's smooth from the moment of ignition.
